1. Bartle Taxonomy
· A classification of video game players based on researcher Richard Bartle in 1996.
· Based on players preferred actions within a game.
· Originally used for players of MMO, but also single player based games as well.
2. Killers
· Competitive in nature.
· Enjoy all PvP aspects.
· Destruction masters.
- In single-player games:
· Games that have many features such as: Destruction, action, chaos are plus.
· More often, they will play the “bad” guy.
· They interactive with their environment by building and destroying.
- In multi-player games:
· Some enjoy the competitive sport of out-witting their opppnet through reading their moves/strategies.
· Others it’s about the ability to overpower others though skill.
· Gankers: using an overpowered character to kill weaker characters.
· Besides PvP, killers also enjoy both social and economic aspects of a game.
· Having dominace of the economic market such as auction houses.
· Socially they tend to be community leaders or trolls, they enjoy influencing other lass talented players.
3. Achievers
· Players who crave a challenge.
· Must collect everything.
· Get all the points.
· Achieve rewards to simply for the prestige of having it.
- In single-player games:
· Most games that can be “completed” caters to an achiever.
· Rewards such as special endings, rare item or bonuses are appealing.
- In multi-player games:
· Opportunity to show their skill and status over other players.
· Look to socializers for praise for their prestige.
· Enjoy seeing their names on top of leaderboards.
· Many MMO’s caters to these by offering special mounts/rewards for achieving specific requirements.
· Most targeted by this genre.
· Achievers may spend large sums of time doing repetitive task.
4. Socializers
· Thoroughly enjoy interacting with players.
· Will also interact with very interesting NPCs.
· Game is another way for them to meet other in/out of the game.
- In single-player games:
· Level and discovery isn’t something that appeals to them.
· Play the most popular games to socialize with others.
· Use the multi-player features a lot.
· Games with strong communities are very appealing.
· Use forums to share experiences and in game accomplishments.
- In multi-player games:
· Any online community is an oasis of enjoyment with new relationships waiting to be created.
· Friends list becomes filled right away, and communicate constantly through:
- Voice chat.
- Private message.
· Guild are very appealing.
· Try to aid other guild members.
· Most influential socializers become famous on servers due to either:
- The services they provide.
- The drama they constantly cause.
5. Explorers
· Enjoy discovering hidden areas.
· Creating maps.
· Finding secrets (Easter Eggs/Glitches)
- In single-player games:
· Enjoy paying close attention to details and solving puzzles.
· Enjoy lore/backstory about the location/settings.
· Reads everything and anything.
- In multi-player games:
· Meet other Explorers and share information.
· Most MMOs offer a wide range of characters and lore for them.
· Explorer will abandon any game when they feel it has become a chore to play.
